But it's ok because I also found him.
Basically, it was my first Monday nannying for this family. Mondays are a little tricky since both kids need to be picked up at the same time, but they are in different places. I decided to pick up the 3 yr old first from his playdate, then get the 5 year old from the bus stop. I got the 3 year old ten minutes early to MAKE SURE I got the 5 yr old on time, but when we showed up to the bus stop, he was gone. No 5 yr old.
I didn't panic.
I went back to the house, figured he knows the way home and maybe he walked? No sight of him.
I call a few playdate buddies, to make sure he wasn't with them. No word of him.
I start to panic.
I call his Dad at work and he is equally freaked out. He gives me more names to call, and then I decide to hit the streets again, calling his name hysterically out of the car window if necessary.
When I open the garage door, look who comes waltzing up? Mr. 5 Yr Old.
Turns out he got into a car with his good buddy, and it took the good buddy's mom about 30 minutes before she thought "I wonder if your nanny knows where you are?" and brought him home.
Seriously lady? What is wrong with you?!!
I call the Dad, and we both heave a huge sigh of a relief.
Then an entirely DIFFERENT kind of panic sets in: I just started this job last week and I already lost their kid. They are going to fire me! I finally get a job I like and I'm canned one week into it. Awesome.
Much to my surprise, the entire day goes awesome. The boys are sweet and play nicely and listen to me. I clean the entire house and it looks fabulous. The dad comes home and gives me a huge bag of delicious potatoes to take home with me.
Basically, I got off easy. Why? Turns out Mr. 5 Yr Old has done this before with the last nanny, and freaked her out too.
Blah! Still stressful. I'm getting the hang of it though. I've already got a pretty good rhythm and I like the family alot.
I only worke 3 days last week and they paid me for a full week! I'm feeling pretty luckyyy yaay.

Whew! That would've freaked me out definitely. Glad it turned out so well and you're loving your job. It makes such a difference to love what you do.
Welcome to nannyhood.
You listen to Butterfly Bones? I was sent an EP of theirs and I thought, given the track titles, that I would hate it. But it's actually pretty good if I recall. So now I've finally learned my book/cover/judging lesson.
