I don't know if anyone has noticed this yet, but I like to mock myself. I'm an easy target, and I don't get offended and not talk to me anymore so it really is the best option when it comes to humor.
I was recently asked, "do you ever get embarassed?" The person doing the asking was being serious, and it surprised me. Yes, I'm human, I get embarassed, but then again....
I come from a family of story tellers. Confident, sassy story tellers at that. If you heard Nikki, Calee, or Kristina tell a story then you know exactly how I tell my stories: lots of hand gestures, and occasional squeal or flare of the nostril, and an open-mouthed belly laugh to top it all off. Check it out sometime, its not a bad way to spend thirty minutes.
Anyways, the point is, I think my inherited story-telling abilities mixed with my instinct to poke fun at myself when I do something ridiculous transforms my perception of embarassment.
Why would I be embarassed that I get nosebleeds all the time, or that I don't know how a jack works, or that I have a crush on a boy and I totally admitted it online? To me, its a great story, its a good way to connect with someone, and it makes me laugh.
Some would say I have no pride, I like to see it as I have no shame.
p.s. my 20th birthday is on Sunday! I'm going to be back in san diego the 18th-21st, and you know what they say about san diego on the weekend of the 18th.
(if you don't know, its that all boys named logan must be present at that time.)
