New Orleans

Guess what? I jetted away from Utah again. This time it was to Mississippi! The past few nights I've been staying with my friend in Bay St. Louis. She lives on a compound (not the creepy kind) with a bunch of other volunteer workers. They restore houses and provide basic disaster relief. To earn my keep I went and painted a house with her the other day. Messy, SO SO hot, random five minute intervals of pounding rain followed by muggy air that makes my hair pretty much an afro.

I had no idea there were still so many houses completely destroyed by Katrina that haven't even had the debris cleared out of them yet. There was an old school building with broken windows and destroyed classrooms that still had class schedules from 2005 on the walls.

We're staying in the French Quarter the next few days. We'll be seeing all the sights, including a tour of what Katrina really did. Having a friend who works for a relief program means I've gotten to see/hear alot of things I know I never would otherwise.

Utah is so far away from all of this...Katrina feels like forever ago for us! But here, the scars are obvious.

Hey Brooke. It was interesting to know that you are in New Orleans. You didn't say how long you are going to be there but just wanted to let you know that Ainsley, her husband and baby are living there now. Terence is working at Tulane University and they live somewhere close by. Is that anywhere near where you are? Be careful and have fun (and work hard!) Love ya.
